Wellness

Mind, body and heart shown as three overlapping circles meeting in balance, set among books, a meal, a candle and a path to the sea at sunset

Ask ten people what wellness means and you will probably get ten different answers.

Nutrition. Exercise. Sleep. Stress. Mental health. Relationships. Purpose.

They all matter, and each one is part of something bigger.

For me, wellness is when the different parts of who we are begin to work together, in sync.

We hear more and more about the difference between lifespan and healthspan, and I think that distinction matters. The question goes beyond how many years we live. It is also about how we live through those years. How we think. How we feel. How we move through the world. How much energy, connection, curiosity, resilience and life we are able to experience along the way.

My simplest way of describing it is this:

Wellness is when:

What goes into your mind: thoughts

What goes into your body: food

What goes into your heart: emotions

are in balance. Connected and connecting.

What we consume mentally matters. What we put into our bodies matters. What we carry emotionally matters. And, perhaps most importantly, each one is connected to the others.

The way we feel can influence the way we eat. The way we nourish ourselves can affect our energy, mood and ability to think clearly. The thoughts we repeat can shape our choices, our reactions and the way we experience what is happening around us. What touches one part of us can ripple into another.

So, to me wellness doesn’t have a start and a finish line. It’s a journey of learning to first understand ourselves, then accepting to work with ourselves and bring different parts of who we are into greater alignment to make us whole again.

You can be doing many of the “right” things and still sense that something is out of balance. One area may simply be asking for a little more of your attention. Sometimes that is exactly where the next part of the journey begins.

I also believe that what we take in carries something with it. A conversation. A meal. A piece of music. A memory. A room. A person. Some things energize us, some weigh on us, some soothe us, and some stay with us far longer than we expected. Learning to notice and recognize each thing for what it truly is, is part of getting to know ourselves.

Wellness is a living, evolving state.

It is something we grow into.

We all move in and out of balance as life changes, our bodies change, our needs change and our circumstances change. Wellness is when noticing, adjusting, understanding and finding our way back into alignment starts to come more naturally.

That is the lens behind everything you will find here. The information, the stories, the ideas, the tools and what we can explore together all come back, in one way or another, to seeing and understanding the person as a whole.

Where you begin is entirely up to you.

If you have found your way to this page, perhaps there is already some curiosity about what wellness could look and feel like in your own life.

If you have already started your own journey into wellness, you may want to look into something that is perhaps asking for a little more of your attention.

If this is the beginning of your exploration, simply start with whatever catches your eye. A film. A book. An idea. A piece of information. A conversation. Something that sparks enough curiosity to make you want to explore a little further.

There is more than one way into wellness. Find the one that feels like yours.
